3 Kitchen Island Features You Need to Elevate Your Everyday Living

The central island is the focal point of your kitchen, so it is an ideal place to elevate your space with unique materials and stunning finishes.

For example, you can select a unique countertop presentation like an underlit quartzite or waterfall edge. And although adding extra features like beautifully detailed legs, a microwave drawer, or a prep sink are luxurious; they are also functional.

So today, I’m sharing 3 features that will upgrade your island with function and style for a more splendid kitchen experience. Let’s go!

1. Space Seating Strategically

As you design your island, consider the optimal traffic flow and available seating space. Plan the informal dining space strategically with at least 24" of width per person, so there is enough elbow room for everyone. Additionally, ensure clearance of 9 to 13 inches between the knees and the bottom of the counter for adequate legroom.

Also, consider adding a prep sink to your island to help traffic flow. It will save you time, so you don't have to run back and forth across your kitchen to wash vegetables, get more water, or rinse dishes.

2. Drawers Instead of Doors

In my opinion, drawers are superior to lower cabinet doors. Although they are a significant investment, you eliminate the need to squat or stretch to find items. Instead, you can easily access its contents in one single motion.

Drawers can conveniently store pots, pans, dishware, and glassware making them fully functional and customizable. Optimize your kitchen with customized pull-outs, built-in spice racks, and clever corner storage units. The investment is money well spent.

3. Plenty of Outlets for Appliances and Electronics

Customize your kitchen island with built-in mechanics and features based on your family's needs. For example, when you add a drawer with outlets inside it to create a hidden charging station hub, all your electronics will be charged, and your counters will look beautiful and free of clutter.
